Must See Documentary on Hip-Hop
Guys, i'm not sure if you have all heard about this documentary, but you have to see this. It's called, "Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes". It's about an hour long and its made by a brother that's a lot like us: He's about 30, grew up loving hip-hop and doesn't like what he's been hearing on the airwaves. Byron Hurt wrote and directed this piece that has played at a number of film festivals and it is outstanding. While he loves hip-hop to this day, he exposes it for what the mainstream of hip-hop has become: overly misogynistic and advocating violence against your fellow brother. We know that there are a lot of rappers out there that aren't all about dehumanizing women and violence, but they don't get the promotion and airplay that the Lil' John's and Lil' Wayne's of this world receive. Have you ever asked yourself why? I know all of you and feel you would love this documentary. We should view this at one of our movie club dates. For everybody else, please support this film.

I think this is a valuable and informative film. It addresses very true and the sad reality of what has been happening to Hip Hop. I truly enjoyed it and encourage others to see it and spread the news especially with the younger generations. The future you can say is in their hands so if we can show them something that addresses something of interest to them and at the same time challenges their minds to think about it from a deeper level then there is hope. We may not be able to change the big corporations but we can educate our kids who listen, buy and believe in the lyrics.
I have not see the movie. I will, cause i'm all about supporting good films made by people of color (an assumption that the director is of color on my part.) However, I must speak on Hip-hop, its current state, and how people much people like to bash it.
I have to say that while I don't like everything that's being played on the radio today, there are creative groups out there not called the Roots (no disrepect Dre) out there doing their thing. I love outkast, but I also like the Ying Yang Twins and David Banner. That may not be everyone's cup of tea but that doesn't mean it's not good. In the east we have to becareful not to get to full of ourselves just because hip-hop was born here. Yes she was born here but since then she's traveled all over the world, poppin babies in, France, South Africa, Cuba, England, Tokyo, in the western and southern US and even Canada. Each of those sounds is different and bringing their own struggle and party to the landscape, often even having to shove a few NY Niggas out the way to do it.
Now I know you guys are going to say that not what you or the movie argues against. That what you're concerned about are the voilent, anit-this-&-that, and sexist lyrics on coming from hip hop artists. But I call all of you hypocrits. I don't know one of you who hasn't banged his head to a gansta joint, whether it came from Dallas, Queen, LA, Shaolin, or Bucktown. Shame on ya'll for crying foul now.
I have to say I sort of agree with Ed's comment. I pretty much fully agree. Look, Hip Hop is what it is. One person, or group of people can't really say their taste is superior to someone else's taste. I like to do it all the time with novels, but really, people read what they want to read.
I have seen the movie, and I think it is a decent documentary, but that its overwhelming premise is sort of basic. I mean, hip hop should not be raising people's kids. If it is, the problem is not that you should fix and control what messages thirty year old high school drop outs are sending to kids, but that someone needs to make sure kids aren’t being raised by music videos and movies. I know that is a basic point, but it actually has validity. No music form should be raising kids. And a lot of parents who are letting their children listen to this music are young themselves and like it. There are always rumors of white executives using hip hop to hold the masses down, but I never believe those. TO me, they care about one thing: dollar bills. They will advertise and pump someone like Lauren hill, because she’s going to make them money. That’s how they make decisions.
As far as misogyny, hip hop has it because men have it, and men run hip hop. Unfortunately, a lot of women are very complicit in the misogyny as well. A lot of popular media is very misogynistic. Look at Entourage: Scantily clad chicks are accessories in the show, like the nice houses and fancy gadgets.
Really misogyny, like racism with whites, should be something all men should be actively struggling against. To rely on an old cliché, when you are pointing the finger at hip hop, you are ignoring the fingers pointing at you.
My point about hip-hop today is that the ONLY thing we are exposed to is the overly simplistic, misogynistic, violent material. The airwaves are inundated with it. There is so much more to it than that. We're lucky that Mos and Common are actually getting some airplay. Nat said what i'm about to write, in so many words, but Kanye can kind of save hip-hop. He has some conscious rhymes and he's not overly misogynistic and violent and he's popular to boot. I know that some among us are haters, but this is a guy I can't hate on for that reason. Maybe, just maybe, he can make it cool to be a man of color that happens to be intelligent. And, without getting too much into the documentary, there are a few coincidences that took place during hip-hop that smell a little to me and I don't believe too much in coincidences.
